Reimagine the actual bite of the Apple

Apple Inc. is a globally recognized company known for pushing the boundaries of what a smart device can be. Products that once existed separately (a phone, a camera, a music player, a computer) have been folded into a single device that has reshaped the way people live. Apple’s reputation continues to draw in new consumers, and its forward-thinking approach ensures that growth will continue. After decades of redefining the tech industry, the public expects nothing less than the best from Apple, and its most loyal customers are often the first to try anything the company releases.

For years, humans have grown deeply dependent on these devices, which many people report feeling “naked” or “incomplete” without their phone in hand. But what about the growing number of people who feel fatigued from staring at a bright screen for hours on end? Remote workers, in particular, often want to step away from their screens, yet the sheer amount of value the iPhone provides makes it nearly impossible to disconnect.

This raises a question: what if a single, discreet device could carry everything an iPhone stores, without requiring a screen at all? What if that same device could also serve people with visual or hearing impairments, allowing them to communicate and access information without the barriers they’ve previously faced?

That product could be a smart ring – one that connects to the body, communicates, stores data, and interprets it in real time. The proposed product is the Apple Ring, a screen-free wearable that replicates core iPhone functions (messaging, calls, notifications, and payments) through haptic feedback and voice interaction, while also functioning as a continuous health monitor. The ring would track blood oxygen levels, sleep quality, and blood glucose trends, and flag early warning signs of cardiac events or allergic reactions.

The key benefits fall into three categories:

  • Reduced screen dependency for users who want the functionality of an iPhone without the compulsive pull of a screen
  • Expanded accessibility for users with visual or hearing impairments who currently navigate phone-based communication with added friction
  • Proactive health monitoring built directly into an object people already wear every day, rather than an app they have to remember to check

Researching the Target Audience

Two overlapping groups seem most relevant to this concept: people experiencing digital or screen fatigue and people with visual or hearing impairments who currently rely on adapted phone features.

For both groups, the research needs to answer some foundational questions: How large is each segment, and is it growing? What are they currently using to solve this problem: an Apple Watch, an Oura Ring, a Whoop band, adapted phone settings? What do they like or dislike about those options? What does their buying process look like, and what matters most: price, brand trust, data accuracy, or avoiding yet another subscription fee? It’s also worth understanding how much people trust Apple specifically with health data, compared to a company that built its reputation solely on wellness tracking.

Researching the Competition

The most direct competitors are other players in the smart ring category, such as Oura and the Samsung Galaxy Ring, along with Apple’s own Apple Watch, which already covers some of the same health-tracking ground. Understanding this landscape means looking at each competitor’s pricing strategy, distribution strategy, and positioning. 

Other External Factors

A few outside forces could shape whether this product is viable. Technologically, a ring’s small size limits battery life and sensor capability compared to a watch. And socially, the continued rise of wellness and quantified-self culture works in the product’s favor, making consumers more receptive to a health-tracking wearable than they might have been a decade ago.

How the Research Will Be Gathered

This concept calls for a mix of secondary and primary research, depending on the question being asked.

Secondary research is the right tool for understanding the competition and external market factors. Primary research is better suited to understanding the target audience directly. A quantitative survey could measure how often people experience screen fatigue, how much they’d be willing to pay, and which features they’d prioritize. Qualitative interviews or focus groups would help capture needs and frustrations that a survey alone is unlikely to surface.
